The bustling port of the capital will be hosting the Global Mercy until the 8th of August. The Global Mercy is the largest civilian hospital ship in the world, operated by Mercy Ships, Naves de Esperanza of Spain. After completing various repair, maintenance, and provisioning tasks in Sierra Leone, the ship is returning to the island for its next humanitarian mission.
During its stay at the port, the Global Mercy aims to engage with the local population of Tenerife through a series of initiatives supported by the Port Authority. These activities will take place throughout the month of July. For this special visit, the Global Mercy has chosen the installation in the capital city.
The Global Mercy is equipped to carry out a wide range of surgeries, from maxillofacial and reconstructive procedures to tumor removal, cleft lip repairs, orthopaedic surgeries, and more. Services such as cataract removal and obstetric fistula repairs are also provided free of charge to patients in host countries during each 10-month field service. Additionally, specialized training courses are offered to local healthcare professionals to enhance their skills and strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
Introducing the Global Mercy
This 174-metre, 37,000-ton ship features 12 decks. The hospital facilities, located on decks 3 and 4, include supply services, six operating rooms, 102 intensive care beds, seven ICU beds, and 90 self-care beds. The ship also houses dedicated classroom spaces and cutting-edge simulation laboratories to support the training of local medical staff.
Besides the hospital amenities, the Global Mercy offers meeting spaces, work areas, and accommodation for up to 641 individuals. Additionally, the ship hosts a K-12 Academy for the children of volunteer crew members serving on board.
Promoting their Humanitarian Efforts in Santa Cruz
Due to the ongoing work aboard the ship, open days will not be feasible during its stay in Santa Cruz. However, plans are in place to set up a designated area at the port in July. Here, the crew of the Global Mercy will showcase their humanitarian work, encourage volunteer participation, provide information about various areas of involvement and the necessary requirements, and seek support from those willing to contribute through their efforts.
