SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 27th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Governing Body of Tenerife has demonstrated its dedication to advocating for diversity and the rights of LGTBIQA+ groups by organising the reading of a manifesto on ‘Pride Day’.
The gathering, which took place in Plaza del Cabildo, was graced by the presence of the president of the island’s governing body, Rosa Dávila; the director of Equality and Diversity, Patricia León, and other members of the institution.
The president emphasised that, in the Tenerife Council, they recognise that “equality and diversity are essential foundations.”
Hence, she remarked, “from the very beginning, I have taken charge of the Equality and Diversity sectors to actively contribute towards creating an environment that honours and embraces all forms of existence and love, the universal rights to life, freedom, and joy.”
Dávila reiterated that the Governing Body aims to be a “leading figure” in championing and advancing the rights of LGTBIQA+ groups.
“To this end, we strongly believe in the significance of educating new generations on the principles of parity and respect. By providing education that nurtures respect and comprehension of diversity, we can eliminate biases and forge a future where all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, feel appreciated and secure,” she underlined.
On her part, Patricia León expressed that it is the institution’s responsibility to establish “a platform for engagement and attentive listening to the communities, and it is a privilege to host the manifesto reading jointly with all communities to celebrate ‘International Pride Day,’ with the goal of realising a more encompassing and equitable society.”
León evoked the words of Judith Butler, stating that “whichever freedom we aspire to, it should be founded on parity.”
The reading of the manifesto, entitled ‘Our pride, our struggle: United and Evident,’ was undertaken by spokespeople from the CanaryPride groups; Opening; Libertans, Diversas, and Chrysallis.
The manifesto underscores the necessity to advocate for “respect” for the diverse group, with diversity education being a vital instrument to “combat this animosity” in educational institutions and households “and to vocalise our stance for genuinely comprehensive and respectful education for all, for everyone.”
