The Canarian composer and conductor Diego Navarro, who is the founder and conductor of the Tenerife International Film Music Festival (Fimucité), was officially accepted as a new member of the American Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (Hollywood) on Tuesday evening.
Navarro now joins three other Spanish music composers, Alberto Iglesias, Javier Navarrete, and Zeltia Montes. He has expressed being “immensely moved,” as mentioned in a statement from Fimucité.
“Considering that my nomination came directly from my fellow members of the Academy and its musical sector, who have acknowledged my candidacy based on my work as a composer, conductor, and my efforts in promoting cinema music, the honour is even more profound,” he shared.
He went on to say, “It feels like a dream come true, and the fantastic news aligns with the success we are experiencing in all the concerts of this year’s Fimucité. It seems like fate has played its part in all of this.”
Diego Navarro is a member of various prestigious organisations such as the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences, Musimagen, SGAE, World Soundtrack Awards Academy. In 2019, he was also invited to join the European Film Academy (EFA).
As the director and founder of Fimucité, Navarro has become a key figure in promoting music composed for visual media on the international stage, establishing himself as one of the most respected conductors in the realm of film music direction.
In November 2022, he was awarded the Gold Medal for cultural merit by his hometown, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in recognition of his contributions as a composer, conductor, and leader of the film music festival.
Subsequently, in 2023, the Cabildo of Tenerife honoured him with the title of ‘Illustrious Son of the Island of Tenerife’.
His portfolio includes successful projects like ‘Capture the Flag’ (Enrique Gato), which won a Goya award and numerous accolades, as well as ‘The Photographer of Mauthausen’ (Mar Targarona), among others.
Navarro has earned both national and international nominations and awards, such as winning the prize for best music for his work on the thriller ‘El Cuco’ (Mar Targarona) at the 24th International Fantastic Film Festival of the Costa del Sol, nominations for the prestigious World Soundtrack Awards(‘World Film Music Awards’) by the Ghent Film Festival for the drama ‘Passage to Dawn’ (Andreu Castro), and double nominations for the IFMCA AWARDS (International Film Critics Association Awards for music in film) for ‘Capture the Flag’.
‘The Mauthausen Photographer’ received two nominations for best orchestral score at the 11th Gaudí Awards and the 2nd Spanish Audiovisual Music Awards respectively.
His recent works include the films ‘Two’ (Mar Targarona) and the Netflix original ‘The Moorland’ (David Casademunt).
