Over 600 goats take part in the traditional Sea Bathing ritual in Tenerife

The historic harbour of Puerto de la Cruz, in Tenerife, was the venue for the annual bathing of goats in the sea on Monday. This ritual, of Guanche origin, is a symbol of purification and fertility, with more than 600 goats participating, as reported by the City Council.

The council highlighted that this tradition, revived through the efforts of Professor Manuel Lorenzo Perera, serves to connect the primary sector with the city. Together with the San Juan bonfires, this event marks the beginning of summer.

“We are committed at the City Council to preserving an ethnographic, cultural, and identity heritage that emphasises the historical essence of a city and a destination that values its traditions,” said Mayor Marco González in a statement.

Furthermore, an ethnographic day took place around the fishing dock, featuring a showcase of traditional Canarian intellectual games organised by José Manuel Espinel Cejas.

The stick game, led by the Auchón Guanil Association, was also part of the event, which was a blend of ancient traditions enjoyed by both the older and younger generations. It proved to be a captivating experience for the numerous tourists visiting the city.
