The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) now has a new base for basic life support ambulances in Granadilla de Abona, as a result of the agreement signed between the City Council and the public company Health and Safety Services Management in Canary Islands (GSC), responsible for this service.
The facility, provided by the City Council, is located on Los Parques Street, in the premises of the former municipal mortuary, in the urban area of Granadilla, and has the necessary infrastructure in terms of safety and prevention of occupational hazards so that the healthcare personnel working in the medical facility have a place to wait and rest until activated to respond to an emergency.
According to the regional director of SUC, Noemí González, the improvement of these facilities allows for the “establishment of a strategically located base in Granadilla for emergency care in the south of Tenerife“.
On the other hand, the Councilor for Security, Carmen Rodríguez, emphasized the importance of this new resource, which responds to an important demand and need of the municipality and the region. It is already operational in an easily accessible and strategic location. The councillor noted that “a significant step is being taken in terms of security for the benefit of the entire population, with suitable facilities commensurate with the vital importance of this service”.
The presentation of the resource was attended by Marcos Antonio Rodríguez, Councilor for Municipal Services of Granadilla de Abona; Faustino Redondo, head of the Operational and Healthcare Coordination Unit of SUC, and Mario Santana, from the Resources and Logistics Unit of the same service.
Granadilla de Abona has two healthcare resources from SUC to cover the southern area of Tenerife, a medicalised ambulance based at the San Isidro health centre and a basic life support ambulance located in the town centre.
Due to their strategic location, these resources provide services over a very extensive area covering the coastal area that includes the towns of El Médano, Los Abrigos, Golf del Sur and Tenerife South Airport, as well as scattered and distant nuclei between San Miguel de Abona, Charco del Pino, Cruz de Tea, Chimiche and El Desierto, among others.
In this regard, they intervene at the site of the emergency, whether on the public highway or at home, and are responsible for transfers or referrals to the southern local hospitals and third-level hospitals in the Metropolitan area, as well as for assisting migrants who arrive by boat on the coast and at the southern docks.
70% of the activity of this basic life support ambulance is carried out within the municipality of Granadilla de Abona and in the upland areas of adjacent municipalities, with an average of five services per day.
