The month of May saw a 5.2% rise in hotel overnight stays in the Canary Islands compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 5,415,068, as reported by the National Statistics Institute’s (INE) Hotel Tourism Situation.
The Canary Islands took third place in the non-resident market within the country, capturing an 18.5% market share, just trailing behind the Balearic Islands (+30.5%) and Catalonia (+19.8%).
Nationally, there was an 11.1% increase in hotel overnight stays in May compared to the previous year, surpassing 35.7 million.
Average billing per occupied room in hotels was 111.7 euros in May, reflecting a 9.2% increase from the same month in the prior year.
Spanish travellers favoured destinations like Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community, with an 8.1% growth in their overnight stays, while non-residents’ top choices were the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and the Canary Islands, experiencing a 12.3% rise in overnight stays.
Over the initial five months of 2024, there was an 8.2% surge in overnight stays compared to the same period in the previous year, with Spanish residents recording a 1.1% increase and non-residents a 12.2% increase, according to the INE.
Andalusia, Catalonia, and the Valencian Community topped the list for Spanish travellers in May, accounting for 21.2%, 14.1%, and 12.6% of total overnight stays, respectively.
Mallorca claimed the highest number of overnight stays by tourist area, exceeding 6.3 million. Barcelona, Madrid, and Calvià were the leading tourist spots in terms of overnight stays.
Travellers from the United Kingdom and Germany continued to dominate the non-resident overnight stays in May, representing 26.1% and 19% of the totals, respectively. Further source markets like France, the Netherlands, and the United States accounted for 9.8%, 5.4%, and 5.0% of the total overnight stays.
In May, 61.7% of available spaces were occupied, marking a 7.8% yearly increase. Weekend occupancy rates saw a 5.7% rise, reaching 67.7%. The Balearic Islands led in terms of space occupancy in May, with a rate of 71.6%.
Palma Calvià emerged with the highest space occupancy rate at 76.2%. It also registered the highest weekend occupancy at 80.9%. Zarautz scored the highest space occupancy rate amongst tourist areas at 84.3%, with Sóller recording the highest weekend occupancy at 84.8%.
8.1% Price Surge
Statistics from the Spanish Institute indicate an 8.1% price hike for accommodations in May compared to the same month in 2023. The Community of Madrid saw the largest increase at 17.1%, while the Foral Community of Navarra saw the smallest rise at 2.8%.
One-silver star establishments witnessed the most significant price increase at 10.1%.
Hotels’ average billing per occupied room (ADR) stood at 111.7 euros in May, showing a 9.2% growth compared to the previous year’s same month.
The average daily income per available room (RevPAR), influenced by these establishments’ occupation, reached 78 euros, marking a 15.6% increase.
ADRs were 274 euros for five-star hotels, 114.2 euros for four-star hotels, and 85.4 euros for three-star hotels. The RevPAR for these categories was 193.1, 87.9, and 61.4 euros, respectively.
Marbella registered the highest ADR among tourist spots at 209.7 euros, whereas Barcelona showcased the highest RevPAR at 175 euros.
