The Our Lady of Candelaria University Hospital, a facility affiliated with the Health Department of the Government of the Canary Islands, has been awarded certification by the Spanish Society for Healthcare Quality (SECA) for its exceptional care provided to patients with multiple sclerosis. .
Based on the ESCALEM standard, the hospital meets all criteria in its processes to ensure top-quality care for its patients.
Presently, approximately 2,800 individuals in the Canary Islands are affected by this condition, with 800 of them receiving treatment at the hospital complex.
Consequently, the hospital’s main focus is on fulfilling all the necessary requirements to ensure the highest standard of care for the patients it serves, as stated in a release from the facility.
Multiple sclerosis is an inflammatory, autoimmune, and neurodegenerative disease that affects neurons in various parts of the body, presenting with diverse symptoms depending on the individual.
Given this complexity in treating and diagnosing patients, there is a pressing need to establish more unified guidelines and care standards for those suffering from this condition.
The ESCALEM certification standard, developed by SECA in collaboration with Novartis, enables multiple sclerosis units to streamline their procedures and enhance outcomes for the benefit of patients and the healthcare system’s efficiency.
The standard incorporates an assessment of 32 quality criteria, focusing on organizational aspects of the units, resource utilization, process design and execution, and achieved outcomes.
Moreover, the standard is supported by the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN), the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacy (SEFH), and the Spanish Society of Health Directors (SEDISA).
It also carries the endorsement of the Spanish Society of Neurological Nursing (SEDENE), the Spanish Society of Health Informatics (SEIS), the Spanish Society of Neuroradiology (SENR), and the Association of Multiple Sclerosis Patients Spain (EME).
