SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 20th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
CIFP César Manrique, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, has been honoured with the Grand Prize at the eleventh edition of the Canary Islands Educational Festival (Cinedfest) for their short film named ‘Behind the Gaze’. The final event took place on Thursday with over five hundred students from across the Archipelago in attendance.
Ana Lima from the Tenerife Film Commission, along with Ángela González Belló from the Education and Youth Service of Cabildo de Tenerife, announced the top award and presented the accompanying trophy to the students of the 2nd year of the Higher Degree in Realization of Audiovisual Projects and Shows at the educational institution in the Ofra neighbourhood.
They expressed gratitude to the teachers and everyone involved in the short film for their support, highlighting that despite the challenging and intense filming process, the learning experience made it all worthwhile.
The winning film revolves around a young aspiring nurse called for a job interview at a unsettling psychiatric clinic. This storyline also secured the Canary Islands Government Award for the prevention of gender violence.
The Distribution award was claimed by ‘Árid’, created by the 1st year students of the CFGS in Viticulture at CEIP Zonzamas (Arrecife), while ‘Herida Abierto’, produced by the 1st year group of Multiplatform Application Development at CIFP César Manrique, took the second prize. Both awards provide opportunities for their short films to be showcased at numerous national and international audiovisual festivals. The awards were presented by the director of the Palma distributor La Botica Audiovisual, Ángel Valiente.
In the Diversity and Inclusion category, the winners were ‘Almas vs El Creador’ from IES Rafael Arozarena (La Orotava) clinching the first prize; ‘Because of you, we do get wet’, from IES Corralejo, in Fuerteventura (2nd prize); and ‘Margarita’, from the Hermano Pedro School Residence, claiming the third prize.
The Social Cinema Award was secured by IES Puerto Cabras Rafael Báez, from Fuerteventura, for ‘Nautae’. The award was received by the students from the Minister of the Presidency, Territorial Planning, Accessibility, Information Technology, and New Technologies of the Majorero Cabildo and head of Fuerteventura Film Commission, Nereida Calero. Meanwhile, IES La Guancha-Jerónimo Morales Barroso was granted the Seniors Award for ‘La departure’, and the Association Award recognised the production ‘To collect you have to sow’, presented by ABIA – Environmental Wellbeing Association.
EXCEPTIONAL PRIZE FROM CABILDO DE TENERIFE
During the Grand Final Gala, Tenerife Cabildo awarded its Special Prize for this edition to ‘Entrevidas’, created by the 1st year Baccalaureate B group of the Universal Literature subject at IES Marina Cebrián (La Laguna), which also received the ‘la Caixa’ Foundation award.
‘The garden of reunions’, from IES Faro de Maspaolomas (Gran Canaria), was selected as the best secondary short film, while the second prize went to ‘Cuestión demone’, from IES San Juan de la Rambla (Tenerife). In the Baccalaureate category, the first prize was claimed by ‘Corre’, produced by IES Guillermina Brito, from the Gran Canaria municipality of Telde, and the second position was secured by ‘Iqbal’, from IES Alcalá, from the Tenerife town of Guía de Isora. In the section reserved for FP-CEPA-EOI and EASD, the winning entry was ‘Árido’ from CEIP Zonzamas (Arrecife), adding another accolade to its list, with the second place going to ‘Betatester’, from IES Cándido Marante Expósito (San Andrés and Sauces-La Palma).
The accolade for the best comedy was assigned to ‘Kelsie and her victims’, by IES Agustín Espinosa (Arrecife) under the Secondary School category; ‘Let them separate’, produced by IES San Benito (La Laguna) for Baccalaureate; and for FP-CEPA-EOI and EASD the title went to ‘Sujetafarolas’, created by the Cándido Marante Expósito institute in Palma.
In the fantasy and horror genre, the co-director of Isla Calavera Canary Islands Fantastic Film Festival – Ciudad de la Laguna, Daniel Fumero, presented the trophies to the students of the Gran Canaria centres: CIPF Felo Monzón Grau-Bassas for ‘Acampada’, winning the first prize in the FP-CEPA-EOI-EASD category, and IES Ingenio, receiving the Baccalaureate prize for ‘Anabel’.
At the Secondary level, the award went to the science fiction short ‘The future in my eyes’, from IES Galeón (Adeje), presented by Ángela González Belló, from the Education and Youth Service of the Cabildo de Tenerife. The best documentary in this year’s Baccalaureate category was ‘Who knows? blindfolded eyes’, from IES Garoé, Valverde municipality, and ‘Between faith and art’, from CIFP César Manrique representing the FP-CEPA-EOI-EASD centres.
The winners of the popular vote in this edition were ‘Soy tú’, from IES Cabrera Felipe de Arrecife (Secondary); ‘Sea in Calm’, from IES La Orotava Manuel González Pérez (Baccalaureate); and ‘Parálisis’, from CIFP César Manrique (FP-CEPA-EOI-EASD).
The directors of Cinedfest, David Cánovas and Antonio Hernández, granted the Teaching Award to Francisco Brazuelo Grund, from IES Faro de Maspalomas (San Bartolomé de Tirajana), acknowledging his significant contribution as a supporter of cinema’s educational application. Meanwhile, the Educational Centre award of this edition was bestowed upon IES Arico.
In the University and film schools category, the Minister of Education and Youth of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria, Olaia Morán, awarded the first prize to the students of the Higher School of Cinema and Audiovisuals of Catalonia (ESCAC) for ‘Hojas de autumn’, and ‘Ana Lima’, from the Tenerife Film Commission, did the same with the authors of Orecchio from the European University of the Canary Islands, which secured the second prize.
The jury of the eleventh edition of Cinedfest decided to award the CEPA-CEAD-EOI trophy to ‘Without a signal’, produced by CEAD Santa Cruz de Tenerife Mercedes Pinto. Additionally, EASD students Fernándo Estévez, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, received the highest award for Animation, for ‘Daisy and Frank’, and IES Arico received a special mention for ‘The hands of my class’. The training award for this edition was given to Gara Castro Martín, from IES Los Cristianos, for her exceptional work in the short film ‘Sin direction’. The award, presented by the director of the School of Modern Music of the Canary Islands, Óliver Martín, includes a scholarship for a course in film musical composition.
Finally, the International Award was presented to the National Autonomous University of Mexico, for the work ‘Roken Strings’, created by the Technology Laboratory for Audiovisual Media and Hypermedia group.
