With just five days left until the San Juan’s night celebration – the shortest night of the year, municipalities in the southern region are calling for residents to act responsibly and with civility, taking extreme safety precautions to prevent any potential accidents.
ARONA
The Arona City Council has banned bonfires on beaches and protected public and natural areas in the municipality, except for designated areas at Los Cristianos beach, Las Galletas, and the Virgen del Carmen urbanization. The council emphasises that besides bonfires, the use of braziers, bottles, and generators is strictly prohibited, with violations subject to penalties as per the law.
In authorised locations, bonfires must be set up in open spaces, away from buildings, trees, power lines, vehicles, and street fixtures, ensuring a minimum safety distance of 100 meters. Bonfires should not exceed three meters in diameter or height and can be lit starting from 8:00 p.m. on Sunday the 23rd.
Residents planning to have a bonfire must inform the Festival Department by 2:00 p.m. on Thursday by means of registration.
ADEJE
In the neighbouring municipality of Adeje, it is also mandatory to notify the authorities of private locations where bonfires will be held. Just like in Arona, the deadline for submission is Thursday, and bonfires should not be ignited before 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.
The council has divided the areas into ‘A’ (farthest from the coast), requiring approval from the Cabildo, and ‘B’, where the council must be informed through a specific application form.
Adeje’s local administration has implemented obligatory guidelines, including placing fire zones away from vegetation and structures, refraining from using flammable materials, and ensuring the bonfire pile does not exceed two meters in height or three in diameter.
SAN MIGUEL
In San Miguel de Abona, where notifying the City Council for authorization is compulsory before any burning activity, a minimum safety distance of 20 meters from any building, power lines, street installations, and vehicles must be maintained. The bonfire construction should not exceed two meters in stacked fuel or three meters in diameter.
PASSION FRUIT
Granadilla de Abona has arranged two official bonfires in El Médano and Los Abrigos, along with musical performances. The municipal beach regulations prohibit fires directly on the ground of beaches, sand, stones, or rocks, as well as in bathing zones within protected areas. The use of gas cylinders and flammable liquids is strictly forbidden as well.
