SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 17th June (EUROPA PRESS) –

Enaire, the air navigation management company in Spain, concluded the month of May with 31,360 flights supervised by the Air Traffic Control Centre in the Canary Islands, marking an increase of 9.3% compared to the same month in 2023.

International air traffic showed a growth of 9.7%, reaching a total of 13,392 flights, while domestic air traffic increased by 9.8% to 14,680 flights, and overflights (flights passing through the airspace without landing or taking off in a Canarian airport) increased by 5.5% to 3,288 flights.

Between January and May, the Enaire Air Traffic Control Centre in the Canary Islands managed a total of 169,741 flights, which is 9.2% more than the previous year during the same period. Out of these, 84,359 were international flights (+10%), 68,409 were domestic flights (+8.9%), and 16,973 were overflights (5.9%).

The Air Traffic Control Centre in the Canary Islands manages air traffic services over an area spanning one and a half million square kilometres, predominantly over oceanic surfaces, encompassing the Canary archipelago and part of Western Sahara. It serves as the gateway to Latin America across the Atlantic.

NATIONAL FIGURES

Nationally, Enaire supervised more than 214,000 flights (214,465) in May, marking an increase of 9.3% compared to the same month in the record year of 2023. International flights in May totalled 125,944, marking an 11.2% increase; overflights (47,452), flights without their origin or destination in a Spanish airport, increased by 6.9%, and national flights (41,069) increased by 6.4%.

The rise in air traffic in Spain in May surpassed the European average by 2.8 percentage points, which stood at 6.5%. All ENAIRE control centres recorded an increase in the number of supervised flights: Palma saw 40,460 flights (+11.3%); Barcelona, ​​106,939 (+10.1%); Canary Islands, 31,360 (+9.3%); Madrid, 111,566 (+8.0%); and Seville, 46,695 (+7.1%).

In the initial five months of the year, the flights supervised by ENAIRE totalled over 886,000 flights (886,907), which is a 9.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023. International flights between January and May (496,143) reported an increase of 11.2%; overflights (205,770), a 7.3% increase, and national flights (184,994), a 6.1% increase.

The rise in air traffic in Spain in the current year exceeds the European average by 2.8 percentage points, standing at 6.4%.

Finally, in the data accumulated so far this year, all ENAIRE control centres have observed an increase in the number of flights supervised: Barcelona witnessed 397,136 flights supervised, up by 10.2% from 2023; Seville, 206,694, an increase of 10.0%; Canary Islands, 169,741, up by 9.2%; Madrid, 503,301, up by 8.7 %, and Palma, 113,119, up by 5.7%.
