The light rain early in the morning did not dampen the festive spirit of the locals to partake in the final event of the Patron Saint Festivities of La Orotava: the pilgrimage – the first one with San Isidro Labrador as the official patron following the canonical concession by the Holy See.
Over 30,000 individuals, as reported by the Local Police, gathered to be a part of this celebration, considered one of the most massive and popular on the islands. The slight rainfall resulted in a cool and overcast day that many appreciated as they cherished every moment of the day, which lasted for several hours and concluded with a grand dance in Plaza de Franchy Alfaro.
The scheduling conflict with the European elections led to the event being postponed by a week, disrupting the four most intense days of the Patron Saint Festivities. This delay may have contributed to an even greater turnout and intensity of experience this year.
Following the Eucharist at La Concepción parish, the procession of San Isidro Labrador and Santa María de la Cabeza commenced after 1:00 p.m., with members of the Brotherhood of Labradors renewing their vows to the patron saints during the religious ceremony.
The pilgrimage officially began at 1:30 p.m. from San Francisco, led by Rosa Dávila, the president of Tenerife Cabildo, and La Orotava’s mayor, Francisco Linares, accompanied by other municipal representatives. A total of 75 carts distributed typical local products and excellent local wine to the attendees, while about thirty parrandas entertained everyone along the route with their traditional songs and dances.
The procession proceeded smoothly to Plaza de La Paz and finally to El Calvario, where reverence to both saints was paid. The celebratory atmosphere continued in Plaza de Franchy Alfaro with the Dorada Band and LD orchestras, complemented by background music by DJ Renzzo El Selector at the Town Hall.
