SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 13th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Cabildo acknowledged the efforts of Isidoro Sánchez and Wolfredo Wildpret in the protection of Teide as part of the 70th anniversary celebration of Teide National Park.
Present at the event were the president of the Tenerife Cabildo, Rosa Dávila; vice president, Lope Afonso; the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo; the mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares, along with the honourees, Isidoro Sánchez and Wolfredo Wildpret.
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila described it as a “momentous day” for Tenerife and the Canary Islands, as they paid a tribute to two remarkable individuals dedicated to the protection, preservation, study, and promotion of nature, Isidoro Sánchez García and Wolfredo Wildpret de la Torre, on the 70th anniversary of Teide – a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.
“They serve as true ambassadors of our landscapes globally and as guardians of our biodiversity,” she explained.
Referring to Isidoro, a native of La Orotava, she mentioned that “from a young age, he has been a devoted caretaker of Teide, demonstrating exemplary stewardship as the managing director of Teide National Park.”
She further added, “His vision and dedication to this vast natural museum and its biodiversity have set a remarkable example of commitment and love for our region.”
Speaking of Wolfredo Wildpret, she stated that “he is a proud Santa Cruz resident whose profound botanical knowledge and research have deepened our understanding of the environment, fostering a culture of conservation and sustainability while passing on his expertise to numerous generations of researchers and environmental science educators.”
Both individuals, she noted, “share a profound passion for biodiversity and nature, evident through their accomplishments and contributions; this passion has been a driving force behind their conservation and educational initiatives.”
Fernando Clavijo underscored the significance of both figures, stating that “meteorology, geology, biology, botany, geography, astronomy, and volcanology are disciplines that cannot be comprehended without Teide, a treasure reciprocated for the care and affection society, like Isidoro and Wolfredo, has vested in it.”
“Thanks to their dedicated efforts, we are able to relish in a National Park that is internationally renowned, serving as a sanctuary, source of pride, and cutting-edge facet of this region,” he remarked.
Francisco Linares, the mayor of La Orotava, spoke on behalf of all the island’s mayors, expressing gratitude to Sánchez and Wildpret for their contributions, stating, “These two intellectuals, gentlemen, and gifted Tenerife residents have imparted invaluable lessons to us all, serving as a beacon for researchers and scientists who continue to make a difference today.
TWO DISTINGUISHED INDIVIDUALS
Vice President of the Cabildo, Lope Afonso, described them as “two distinguished individuals who have significantly advanced the conservation of its rich heritage and elevated it to a World Heritage status.”
“They are two eminent figures from the island of Tenerife. This tribute, if possible, further enhances the names of Teide and Tenerife,” he emphasised.
During the ceremony, a video was shown featuring Isidoro Sánchez, recounting his journey with Teide throughout his career, followed by his speech: “It is never too late for happiness, especially when accompanied by Botanist Professor Wolfredo Wildpret,” he began, proceeding to share insights into his professional life and personal ties to Teide.
“It has been an honour and a privilege to work for and with Teide National Park,” he remarked.
Wolfredo Wildpret recollected a summer month in 1943 spent with his mother and sister, where as a teacher, “he took his students to explore the marvels of Teide, its vegetation, and flora.”
“When I am on Teide, I feel transported to another realm where I encounter unique life forms. As a Trustee of Teide National Park for over 50 years, it fills me with immense pride. Teide has brought me great joy and concerns, and visiting him always recharges my energy,” he reflected.
