A meeting is scheduled on July 9 between the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo of Tenerife, and the City Council of La Laguna. The meeting will involve technical managers and political representatives from these administrations who are all involved in the Las Chumberas urbanization project. This was announced during the recent municipal plenary session, as part of a motion proposed by the PP to advance the replacement and redevelopment of Las Chumberas. This project has been agreed upon by all political parties and approved institutionally. The upcoming technical and political meeting will focus on the progress of the project and the expected completion timelines, as stated by municipal sources.
Following this meeting, representatives from the administrations will meet with local residents to provide updates on the current status and outline the next steps, in line with the approved motion. Additionally, within a three-month period, a schedule for the completion of the first phase of the works will be designed, agreed upon, and communicated to the residents.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Development will be requested to set a final date for the convening of the Monitoring Commission for the Las Chumberas Singular Action Agreement. This meeting aims to address outstanding issues to conclude actions related to the first phase. Special attention will be given to securing additional financing to support the project and proposing the necessary steps for the subsequent phases of development.
The City Council has also committed to continuing funding the relocation of affected families until their homes are officially delivered, and urges the signing administrations to uphold their financial commitments as agreed upon (Ministry of Development 50%, Government of the Canary Islands 35%, Cabildo 10%, and City Council 5%), in order to address any cost variations that may arise during the project.

Commission for Equality and Inclusion

Additionally, the plenary session approved an institutional motion proposed by La Laguna’s Mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, to establish a Special Commission for Equality, Social Integration, and Anti-Discrimination within the municipality. The primary objectives of this commission include enhancing current initiatives related to these crucial matters and fostering social cohesion among the residents of La Laguna. This initiative is deemed urgent to adapt to both global and local societal changes.
Beyond addressing immediate requirements, this commission will also prepare the city to tackle upcoming challenges in the short and medium term, ensuring that La Laguna remains an inclusive and equitable environment for all its inhabitants, as informed by the city council.
