SAN SEBASTIÁN DE LA GOMERA, 14th June (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, along with the Director of the Canarian Health Service, Carlos Díaz, paid a visit to the new local medical facility in Alajeró, situated in the urban area of the municipality. A total of 660,000 euros has been invested in this project.
Clavijo emphasised that this modern infrastructure enhances the quality of healthcare for residents within the Alajeró Basic Health Zone and streamlines the tasks of the healthcare staff, to whom he conveyed his satisfaction and gratitude for their dedicated service.
“It is crucial for our public healthcare professionals to have the necessary infrastructure and tools to provide excellent service to the citizens. However, the essential factor is the quality of our public workers, of whom we are extremely proud,” he highlighted.
On the other hand, Carlos Díaz underscored that this is the first local clinic owned by the Canarian Health Service and expressed gratitude to the management of health services in La Gomera, the health area leadership, and all the Canarian Health Service staff for their efforts in making the inauguration of this new facility possible.
The President of the Cabildo of La Gomera, Casimiro Curbelo, and the Mayor of Alajeró, Manuel Plasencia, were also present during the visit. They toured the premises alongside the Director of the Health Area of La Gomera, Eva Ravelo, and the Manager of Health Services on the island, Guacimara Barrera.
Casimiro Curbelo, the President of the Cabildo, highlighted the significance of having this new exceptional healthcare resource, signifying the establishment of a new Basic Health Unit for the municipality of Alajeró, benefiting almost 2,000 individuals.
Moreover, he stressed the importance of “maintaining such services in rural areas, allowing us to continue progressing in healthcare matters on an equal footing for all citizens, particularly those residing in rural regions.”
He added that La Gomera has recently incorporated crucial services such as MRI, the Mental Health Unit, and the Addiction Care Unit into its range of healthcare services.
Area of 400 Square Metres
The new local medical facility in Alajeró spans an area of four hundred square metres distributed on a single ground floor.
It features a reception and administrative area positioned in front of the main entrance to the centre, organising care across two sections: one housing two consultation rooms, one for medical appointments and another for interconnected nursing services, alongside multipurpose rooms, waiting lounges, and restrooms; and another area furnished with emergency care equipment and a resuscitation space for patients.
Additionally, designated sections have been allocated within the premises for technical units and areas for staff utility.
The new centre meets the requirement of providing healthcare services nearer to rural areas with dispersed populations, simplifying both administrative procedures and healthcare services in this geographical region, where 20% of users fall within an age profile exceeding 65 years.
The newly inaugurated facility, which commenced operations on Monday, is staffed with a doctor, a nurse, and an administrative assistant, with plans to recruit a physiotherapist and other professionals based on requirements.
The Alajeró basic health zone, encompassing 2,157 health cards, houses two Primary Care centres: the Playa de Santiago health centre and the local medical facility in Alajeró. It caters to the population entities of Alajeró, Antoncojo, Arguayoda, Barranco de Santiago, Guarimiar, Imada, Playa Santiago, Targa, Quise, and Almacigos in the municipality of Alajeró, as well as Barranco de Santiago, Laguna de Santiago, Benchijigua, Lo del Gato, Las Toscas, and Tecina in the municipality of San Sebastian de La Gomera.
