The construction of a third lane on the TF-5 motorway between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport, heading downhill, has been given the green light. The Environmental Impact Assessment for the project is favourable, provided that a series of measures are met. This is established in the agreement of the Regional Environmental Assessment Commission regarding this action, a resolution that has been published in the Official Gazette of Canarias (BOC) of this Tuesday, June 11.
Therefore, this project, which aims to reduce traffic congestion on the North motorway between Guamasa and Los Rodeos, has received environmental approval. The next steps to proceed with the construction will involve the signing of an agreement between both administrations and the tendering of the works, which will require an investment of around 55 million euros. Once the project is awarded, it must be completed within a 20-month period.
Specifically, this Tuesday’s BOC contains the resolution of May 28, 2024, making public the agreement of the Regional Environmental Assessment Commission of May 22, regarding the Environmental Impact Assessment report of the project called Third lane on the TF-5 motorway downhill between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport, promoted by the Tenerife Cabildo, in the municipal terms of Santa Cristóbal de La Laguna and Tacoronte.
This report has been processed through the “simplified evaluation”, to analyze the project’s effects on the environment, population, human health, flora, fauna, biodiversity, geodiversity, land, soil, subsoil, air, water, climate, climate change, landscape, material goods and cultural heritage.
The commission has agreed that the said action “has no significant adverse effects on the environment, so it does not need to undergo the regular Environmental Impact Assessment procedure“, which would delay its execution. However, a series of environmental measures will need to be implemented. These include environmental restoration through the planting of native species; vegetative landscape integration; control of pollution by particle emissions (dust); conducting a new noise study and incorporating mitigating physical measures for it; and protecting two architecturally significant properties located at number 3 on El Túnel Street and number 61 on the North General Road.
