A global view from a local perspective. This is the essence of the alliance driven by the Tenerife Island Council in defence of the oceans through the cleaning and regeneration of the island’s coast with the boost of the Coastal Environmental Participation and Volunteer Strategy. The first action will take place today with a cleaning activity on the beaches of Almáciga and Benijo for World Oceans Day. The goal is to preserve the coast and create a specific volunteer network. This was explained yesterday by the President of the Council, Rosa Dávila; the Councillor of Natural Environment, Sustainability and Safety, Blanca Pérez, and the Director of Natural Environment, Pedro Millán, at an event attended by around a score of environmental group representatives.
Rosa Dávila stated that “the conservation of the island and its territory is a priority for us, and we have been doing this since we arrived at the Council.” She added, “we will implement the strategy hand in hand with the Office of Environmental Participation and Volunteering and the groups working together.” She emphasized that “taking care of our territory and coast is an attitude, and we want to form an alliance to involve the entire population in this task.” Dávila mentioned that next Tuesday she will meet with the General Secretariat of Fisheries of the State – also with the Government of the Canary Islands – to promote the declaration of marine reserves in Anaga and Teno-Rasca.
Blanca Pérez highlighted the work of the Office of Environmental Participation and Volunteering “which organises 400 activities a year involving around 5,000 people and provides theoretical and practical training. The aim is to create a volunteer network linked to the coast.”.
Pedro Millán explained that the goal is “to generate a vision and appreciation of volunteer initiatives for the conservation of the coast of Tenerife and, through a participatory process, to create a common working document to implement voluntary work on the island’s coast throughout the year.”
Coordination and a common work proposal between entities and administrations. That is the philosophy. The Council initiates a process with society to have a document by the end of the year.
