Yesterday, the Adeje City Council plenary session approved the II Equal Opportunities Plan of Adeje (PIOA), with the favourable votes of PSOE, CC and Podemos. It is the second plan to be introduced in the history of the municipality, with the main goal being the promotion of equal opportunities between genders. The document will now be displayed publicly for one month, during which any necessary objections can be raised. Following this, the final approval will take place.
Councilor for Health and Quality of Life, Esther Rivero Vargas, championed the approval of the plan during the plenary session. She described it as “a structured set of measures based on the analysis of the local situation, aiming to achieve genuine equality and eradicate gender discrimination through the implementation of initiatives that will transform society into a more just one.” Rivero Vargas emphasised that “Adeje is a town that advocates for equality, using it as a tool to enhance and innovate public services for the community, impacting all social spheres and encouraging participation.”
Aside from advancing equality between men and women, the PIOA strives to promote the integration of a gender perspective within its area of influence and across the competencies of each municipal department or company. This involves prioritising various actions and tools to progress towards narrowing the inequality gap, as well as implementing suitable measures to expedite the achievement of tangible equality results in the short term, particularly in areas where it is lacking.
To achieve these three core objectives, the PIOA will be carried out through five strategic guidelines, leading to the establishment of fourteen programmes and 56 specific actions to accomplish the set targets.
The II Adeje Gender Equality Programme has been developed following an evaluation of gender equality within the town. The analysis highlighted the persistence of a glass ceiling as a recurring impediment in the Adeje community, making it challenging for women to progress in their careers or access certain positions or responsibilities.
