SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 7th June (EUROPA PRESS) –

In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the inauguration ceremony of the new presidents of the Auditing Body, Pedro Pacheco, and the Consultative Council, Carlos de Millán, took place at the headquarters of the Government’s Presidency.

Highlighting the start of a “new era” in two pivotal bodies for the community’s operation, Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, emphasised in her address.

“These are two pillars that ensure proper financial management and strict adherence to the law. By appointing Pedro Pacheco and Carlos de Millán as their presidents, we entrust these significant responsibilities to highly capable hands. Their experience guarantees diligence, independence, and excellence in their duties,” she stated.

Astrid Pérez also mentioned that the Auditing Body, established by Parliament 35 years ago, is facing significant challenges in the upcoming years.

She noted, “This term starting today anticipates the retirement of nearly half of its staff, a necessary change that should be utilised to modernise the organisation to meet new demands for oversight, data analysis, and the implementation of more efficient and rapid auditing methods.”

Consequently, she emphasised the need for “increased technological advancements and the development of new applications to align with the evolving electronic administration standards.”

Discussing the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands, the Chamber’s President underlined that it will soon celebrate its 40th anniversary, and Parliament must respond to the challenges laid out by Carlos de Millán.

“Indeed, there is an urgent need to promptly update Law 5/2002, dated 3rd June, governing the Consultative Council of the Canary Islands, which is now 22 years old. It must adapt to current times and major legal amendments such as the 2018 revision of our Autonomy Statute or the Parliament of the Canary Islands Regulations modifications ratified in May 2023,” she explained.

She added, “It is also crucial to enhance digital modernisation and electronic processing, as well as improve the external communication of this institution’s activities; the Chamber will always support these endeavours.”

Both Carlos de Millán and Pedro Pacheco outlined key strategies for their forthcoming leadership at the helm of these organisations associated with the Canary Islands Parliament.

Concluding the event with his address, Fernando Clavijo, the President of the Canary Islands, praised the critical role played by the Auditing Body and the Consultative Council in supervising public administrations on the islands, as reported by Parliament.
