ENERGY CANARY ISLANDS | Valle San Lorenzo reservoir, featuring floating solar panels

The Tenerife Island Council continues with the decarbonization process of the public company Balsas de Tenerife (Balten), with an investment of 3.3 million Euros in the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir (Arona). Of this amount, 931,694 Euros come from a grant awarded by the Canary Islands Government to promote self-sufficiency of public administrations within the framework of the Sustainable Energy Strategy in Canary Islands. On the other hand, the island’s Primary Sector department will invest 1,853,388 Euros in the installation of floating solar panels in the same reservoir in Arona, a project that complements the installation of this type of infrastructure in the San Antonio reservoir in La Matanza.

Valentín Gonzalez Évora, the island’s Primary Sector councillor, highlights that “the installation of these panels is a pioneering project in the Canary Islands, with which we aim to advance towards the decarbonization of Balten, using renewable energies with the aim of applying sustainability criteria to the actions we promote in the area”.

Furthermore, the Island Council will carry out an action aimed at resealing the Valle San Lorenzo reservoir. The initiative has a budget of 1,504,957 Euros. These works will allow to “improve water storage efficiency”, an aspect that the Tenerife Island Councilor considers “essential, considering the climatic circumstances and their consequences”.

The installation of floating solar panels in this reservoir in the south of the island is part of the process to achieve energy self-sufficiency, while the resealing action is aimed at ensuring the viability of the photovoltaic project, notes the island councillor.

Gonzalez Évora argues that “this initiative confirms the commitment of the island Corporation to the concept of sustainability, which, in a cross-cutting manner, reaches the areas of the environment, the economy, and society”.
