As part of the patron saint festivities, the Taoro Lyceum hosts the XL Wine Contest Villa de La Orotava, in which 35 wineries from the denominations of origin of Tenerife and as many growers from La Orotava participate, resulting in about a hundred samples. It is a competition that values red wines from the island, distributed across the categories of growers, young reds, and reds with barrel aging, the latter two being insular in nature.
The contest is one of the precursors of what is now known as the Designation of Origin Valle de La Orotava, established as an island meeting to maintain and enhance the relationship between winemakers and growers from the Orotava region and other areas.
During the Thursday session, coinciding with the celebration of the Infraoctava del Corpus, not only will the final tasting take place, but also the reading of the minutes and the award ceremony for the winners, as well as the traditional lunch. Three awards are given per category. The winner among the Villa growers will offer their wine at the grand Magos Dance dinner, organized by the Taoro Lyceum.
As in the last two years, a special prize will be awarded to the best crafted wine using the listán negro and listán negro barrel varieties, paying tribute to the most cultivated red grape variety in the Valle de La Orotava, as stated by the City Council in a press release.
In celebration of the contest’s four decades, the Taoro Lyceum Society publishes a book entitled Forty years supporting wine in the Valle de La Orotava. It includes articles on the region’s agriculture, the landscape of the braided cord, and field work, as well as an update on the history of this contest, complementing the publication made 10 years ago under the name The vineyard and the wine in the Valle de La Orotava, also published by the Taoro Lyceum.
The collaboration of the European University of Canarias and its Advertising degree stands out, where students participate with their poster proposals under the guidance of Professor Carolina Hernández Reyes. The logo category winner was Lucía Rouco, while the best poster was designed by Natalia Gómez Saénz.
The final activity of this anniversary is the provision of an introductory course to Canary Wines.
