The bustling streets of La Laguna’s historic centre transformed into a canvas of tradition and festivity yesterday to honour Corpus Christi. Vibrant volcanic sand from the Teide National Park, along with delicate petals and colourful flowers, adorned the streets in celebration of the Blessed Sacrament. The procession, commencing from the Cathedral, traversed the intricate designs adorning the pavement.
A total of 68 ornate carpets graced the streets, a significant increase from the 2023 edition. Various groups such as brotherhoods, social and cultural entities, neighbourhood associations, schools, festival committees, families, parish groups, associations, sports clubs, and businesses collaborated to create these intricate tapestries.
The City Council showcased a grand carpet measuring 75 meters in length and 300 square meters in area, spanning from Casa de los Capitanes to Casa del Corregidor on Obispo Rey Redondo Street. This magnificent tapestry complemented the array of carpets lining the procession route, which commenced at 5:00 p.m. through Obispo Rey Redondo, Nava and Grimón, San Agustín, Ascanio, and Nieves streets.
Throughout the day, hundreds of spectators gathered to witness the artistry behind these carpets and accompany the Blessed Sacrament on its procession. Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, emphasised, “The City Council has called for active participation and preservation of this timeless tradition, and the response has been outstanding.”
This year saw the distribution of nearly 30,000 flowers, including roses, geraniums, astromelias, sunflowers, carnations, and gerberas, alongside almost 40 trucks of heather as natural embellishments for the carpets. These botanical varieties predominated the floral displays, supplemented by ferns and other greenery.
The Board of Brotherhoods and Associations of La Laguna affirmed that Corpus Christi is among the oldest religious festivals celebrated on the island.
