Tenerife’s Council to Invest 18 Million Euros in Revamping Tourist Spots

The announcement from Tenerife’s Council on Friday revealed a plan to allocate 18 million euros between 2024 and 2027 towards the Island Program for Strategy and Regeneration of the Tourist Space, which was approved in the recent Government Council meeting.

The island’s Government will fund 70% of the total amount for this initiative, with the remaining 30% to be covered by the municipalities where the projects will take place.

Lope Afonso, the Vice President of Tenerife’s Council and Minister of Tourism, emphasises that “the objective is to enhance the public tourist areas of the municipalities with the highest tourist influx”, namely Arona, Adeje, Puerto de La Cruz, San Miguel, and Santiago del Teide, which together account for almost 90% of the island’s tourist accommodations.

The main goal of the Program for Strategy and Regeneration of Tourist Spaces (PIER) is to “execute projects that enhance, refurbish, and utilise essential infrastructure, following sustainability and competitiveness criteria within the outdated tourist zones of Tenerife.”

The Council’s Vice President stresses that “we aim to implement a sustainable strategy by balancing environmental, economic, and social factors.”

Lope Afonso underscores that “this Programme aims to enhance the destination’s value, thereby boosting tourist expenditure,” and he further mentions that “we expect this investment to spur growth in the private sector, encouraging enhancements to our accommodation offerings and complementary services.”

Afonso mentions that “soon, we will engage with the municipalities involved in this Programme to prioritise actions that are crucial to them, aiming to collaborate closely with local entities in a coordinated manner.”

The distribution criteria for this Programme focus on the number of lodging options per municipality, tourist density, and established tourist regions.
