The Tenerife Island Council announced yesterday the approval of budget allocations for 15 towns on the island to acquire completed, under construction, or new housing units through the Insular Active Housing 2024 Programme. These homes will be made available for Tenerife residents under a social rental scheme, with a total budget exceeding 12 million Euros, capped at one million per town, supplementing the funding provided by the local councils.
Vice president of the Council, Lope Afonso, expressed hopes of expanding the public housing rental offerings to enable local councils, who are most familiar with their municipalities’ demographics, to propose suitable properties for acquisition. “Currently, there are 227 homes earmarked for this purpose, benefitting nearly a thousand residents of Tenerife,” he elaborated.
Housing Minister Sonia Hernández highlighted the focus on promptly bringing housing units onto the rental market based on municipal proposals. The allocated amounts have been segmented into three categories: “housing acquisition, properties requiring completion works, and new constructions.”
Following these criteria, the towns acquiring housing, with a budget of 1,855 million Euros allocated by the Council, are San Miguel for 23 units, La Guancha for 5 units, and Arico for 3 units. For the procurement of homes needing completion, with a total budget of 5,551 million Euros, towns include Santa Úrsula for 26 units, Santa Cruz de Tenerife for 25 units, Güímar for 20 units, Buenavista and Granadilla de Abona for 15 units each, and El Tanque for six units.
For new housing constructions, amounting to 5.12 billion Euros, towns include La Laguna with 29 buildings, La Matanza with 24 buildings, La Orotava with 20 buildings, El Sauzal and Santiago del Teide with 8 buildings each, and Los Silos with two buildings.
The recipient town councils commit to managing the rental homes directly or through the transfer to the Canarian Housing Institute. Those opting for self-management will oversee the waitlists of housing applicants in each town.
