Santa Cruz of Tenerife may introduce a bus lane starting from the Dársena roundabout (port area) that connects to the San Andrés highway and leads to Las Teresitas. This initiative aims to enhance the efficiency of public transport during peak traffic times.
The city council announced a recent meeting with various authorities including Tenerife Cabildo, Puertos de Tenerife, and Titsa. The purpose of the meeting was to explore the feasibility of establishing the proposed road on days with favourable weather forecasts and high anticipated visitor numbers to Las Teresitas beach.
Additionally, there is a proposal to conduct a trial run to identify challenges and benefits associated with implementing an on-demand bus lane to enhance public transport efficiency on days of heavy traffic and increased frequency of line 910.
The concept involves a specific and adaptable schedule based on weather conditions and visitor influx, allowing for the lane closure to be lifted once delays on the routes have dissipated, while still enforcing a no-parking policy in the Marítima Avenue area of San Andrés.
It is clarified that the proposal includes a dedicated lane for buses, which could also be utilised by emergency vehicles if required.
The designated lane would commence at the Dársena roundabout (port area), connect to the San Andrés highway (TF-11), and provide ample notice before the lane ends at the San Andrés roundabout (Cabildo area).
Subsequently (City Hall area), cones will mark the lanes along Marítima de San Andrés Avenue, with parking restrictions in place. Towards the end of the avenue where the lane terminates, buses will have right of way, regulated by priority yield rules.
Additionally, a diversion will be set up at the roundabout where TF-11 ends, as line 946 (Intercambiador-Almáciga) and line 947 (Intercambiador-Chamorga) will need to exit the bus lane at the roundabout to join the Taganana highway (TF-12).
In the latter scenario, assistance from the Local Police will be required for the maneuver at this point.
It is planned to have port police stationed in the Puertos roundabout zone and the Santa Cruz Local Police in the San Andrés Avenue area during peak hours, to prevent unauthorized access and misuse of the lanes.
It is also deemed necessary for the road maintenance team of Tenerife Cabildo to be present at the closure site for an appropriate duration to reinforce and replace signage if needed.
