The La Laguna City Council has raised the alarm about the theft of approximately 10% to 15% of the plants from the garden areas in the municipal historical centre.
These acts of incivility have been uncovered in the past few weeks, following the completion of planting seasonal flowers for the changing season, as stated by the Councilor for Municipal Services, Fran Hernández.
The situation has been particularly noticeable in places like the Plaza de la Junta Suprema, where tagetes plants, renowned for their large and vibrant flowers, have been the primary targets of these thefts, along with other areas in the historical centre that have also been affected.
The councilor has expressed his dismay at these incidents, describing them as regrettable, “as they violate our public spaces and have a negative impact on the city’s image.” He also highlighted the financial implications for public funds.
According to Hernández, maintaining public spaces is a collective responsibility, urging citizens to report such actions and assist in preserving green areas and gardens in good condition “so that both residents and visitors can enjoy a pleasant and well-maintained environment.”
