The renowned Canary Islands International Environmental Film Festival (FICMEC) will be showcasing ‘Mountains of Fire, the hidden world of volcanoes’, the newest book penned by Clive Oppenheimer. FICMEC transcends film to delve into various aspects related to the environment. An illustrative example is the upcoming ninth edition of the Vulcanalia symposiums, organised by the Telesforo Bravo-Juan Coello Foundation.
Esteemed volcanologist and esteemed educator at the esteemed University of Cambridge is set to elaborate on his latest literary creation this coming Tuesday, 28th May at 3:30 p.m. at Casa de Piedra de Garachico as part of the enlightening Vulcanalia discourse.
Oppenheimer has actively contributed to several cinematic productions by the esteemed filmmaker, Werner Herzog. His groundbreaking research and his exceptional ability to communicate scientific knowledge captured the attention of the venerable German director, leading to his involvement in the notable works ‘Encounters at the end of the world’. Subsequently, they collaborated on two additional documentaries, namely ‘Fireball’ and ‘Into the Inferno’.
Vulcanalia will also grace the presence of two esteemed figures in the realm of international volcanology: María Fernanda Martínez Báez Téllez and Benjamin Van Wyk des Vries. The former boasts a degree in Biology and a PhD in Geology from the esteemed Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She possesses a wealth of experience in community engagements and boasts over a decade of involvement in the prestigious UNAM Geopedregal project.
On the other hand, Van Wyk des Vries serves as a distinguished professor of volcanology at the esteemed Magmas and Volcanoes Laboratory, affiliated with the esteemed Blaise Pascal University in France. Graduating with honours in Earth Sciences and Geology from the esteemed University of London, he completed his doctorate at the prestigious Open University, focusing on the Tectonic and Magmatic Evolution of Nicaragua. His research primarily concentrates on the volcano-tectonic aspects (‘volcanic architecture’). Additionally, he specialises in areas such as volcanic landslides and rock avalanches, monogenetic volcanoes, and volcanic hazards.
These three distinguished specialists will be imparting their invaluable insights and experiences during the much-anticipated Vulcanalia volcanology symposium on Tuesday, 28th May and Wednesday, 29th May in the picturesque location of Garachico.
The Memoria Mágica event has completely sold out all tickets for the session scheduled on Tuesday, 28th May. Due to overwhelming demand, FICMEC has diligently arranged an additional session set to take place on Sunday, 2nd June at 11:00 a.m. in the historic setting of the old San Francisco convent. During this event, the festivities of the Cristo de Garachico will be celebrated and remembered.
