The charming village of Granadilla de Abona commences its Patron Saint Festivities today honouring San Antonio de Padua and Nuestra Señora del Rosario 2024 with the enthralling proclamation by the Chasnera party. The Department of Culture and Festivals, led by Francisco Socas Díaz, introduced the extensive programme scheduled to run until the 13th of June, the day of the patron saint.
Present at the unveiling were the mayor, Jennifer Miranda Barrera, the councillor, and the creator of this year’s poster image, crafted by local artist Juanmi Alemany. Miranda highlighted that “June will once again bring back the vibrancy and joy that the patron saint festivities infuse into Granadilla,” urging all Granadilla residents to “step out onto the streets and partake in a diverse array of events, embracing our traditions and fostering community spirit.” She also emphasised that by selecting the Chasnera party to deliver the proclamation this year, it not only recognises their contributions but also signifies a dedication to all community groups in the municipality.
Socas further pointed out that “everything is set for these festivities, my first as the head of this department. We have diligently prepared for months with immense pride and passion.” The highlight of the events will be the lively taifa dance in the square and around the church of San Antonio de Padua, serving as the starting point for the traditional pilgrimage. Additionally, the craft fair will be relocated to the iconic Arquitecto Marrero street and González Mena square.
Beyond the proclamation, today will feature a culinary journey (Indulging in the flavours of Granadilla’s orchard) and A Taste of the Countryside at Table in Los Hinojeros park. This will be followed by a tasting of local produce and wines from Granadilla wineries, running from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. (Saturday), with the proclamation reading and the introduction of candidates for the children’s queen, adult queen, and senior pilgrim beginning from 8:30 p.m. in the church square.
Tomorrow, at 8:00 p.m. in the same setting, the XIX Taifa Dance will captivate attendees, featuring local groups and parties alongside invited groups Igara, Añate, and Tigaray.
