The Criminal Division of the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) has upheld the 22-year prison sentence for a man for continuous abuse of three of his granddaughters in Tenerife. The court dismissed the convicted man’s appeal, also maintaining the order for supervised release for eight years following his release from prison and an indemnity of 20,000 euros split between two of the victims.
The abuses, which spanned several years, began when the girls were minors, ranging from 5 to 11 years old. According to the details of the case, the convicted man took advantage of moments when the girls were in his care to engage in inappropriate acts, including touching and exposure to pornographic material. The victims, who have now come of age and decided to speak out, described incidents of harassment that included intimidation and bribes from their grandfather to keep silent.
The defense’s argument, suggesting a conspiracy by the victims out of resentment, was strongly rejected by the TSJC. The court emphasized the consistency and credibility of the testimonies of the young women, as well as the psychological symptoms consistent with having suffered abuse.
