Following the discovery of 28 instances of illegal dumping on public roads, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is determined to confront residents who persistently discard waste outside designated areas.
Carlos Tarife, the Public Services Councillor, has introduced what he refers to as the “chair campaign”. He will be positioned in front of the containers located in the problematic areas of the city where waste management regulations are being flouted.
“Although we have conducted awareness campaigns, updated ordinances, and issued fines, further actions are necessary to curb such utterly uncivil behaviour,” remarked the mayor.
The objective is to deter offenders who continue to litter the streets and enlighten them on the proper use of the containers.
Commencing on Tuesday in Añaza and continuing the following day in Ofra, the initiative will involve evening visits with a Public Services inspector and Local Police officer engaging with residents,” he confirmed.
According to Tarife, the occurrences are a result of the containers being relocated within a 50-meter radius from their original positions to streamline waste collection and enhance recycling efforts by consolidating organic, plastic, paper, and glass containers.
Despite this, residents persist in discarding waste in their previous spots, resulting in unattractive city streets. “There have been instances where the container was relocated by 10 meters, yet residents continue to deposit waste in its former location.”
If violations persist, fines ranging from €2,000 to €10,000 may be imposed, depending on the type of waste and the environmental impact caused.
