The La Recova shopping centre, situated behind the Nuestra Señora de África Market, is gearing up for a renovation that will enhance its accessibility for individuals with mobility limitations and will introduce more green spaces. The project was given the green light by the local Government Board, with construction contracts awarded to Gomar Arquitectos for a total of 539,202 euros, spanning a period of five months starting from the expected tender date this year.
Covering an area of 2,760 square meters, the works will primarily concentrate on the three-storey building and its three separate entrances from Darias y Padrón, Bethencourt y Molina, and José Manuel Guimerá streets. Housing 60 establishments and dining areas, the centre will now ensure universal access throughout its premises.
The renovation will involve the elimination of stairs and steps, installation of non-slip doormats at entrances, replacement of elevators, placement of tactile paving strips and handrails on staircases, modification of interior green granite flooring, adaptation of bathrooms, and creation of more disabled parking spaces in the lower parking lot.
Additionally, outdoor areas will see the installation of planters and open spaces with trees, facilitating accessible pathways that enhance environmental quality and offer natural shade to the public space.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez commented that “the project will modernise access to the rear of the Market, enhancing comfort while prioritising accessibility for individuals with reduced mobility.” He also emphasised that “these improvements will showcase this iconic commercial hub of the city and will foster commerce in this area that is an integral part of the lives of all Chicharreros.”
In addition, Councilor for Strategic Projects, Carlos Tarife, mentioned that “Funding from the Next Generation European funds will be available, with an allocated amount covering 80% of the total planned investment.” He also highlighted that “this project contributes to a series of initiatives that have secured 1,719 million euros to support markets, mobile commerce, and marketing channels – in this case, focusing on actions to enhance the competitiveness of La Recova and its vicinity.”
