Santa Cruz de Tenerife has identified close to thirty black spots where illegal waste dumping occurs, with citizens discarding garbage in areas and streets that are designated as illegal despite having designated waste containers situated less than 200 meters away. A recent report by Valoriza, the company responsible for municipal cleaning services, highlights the rise in these violations, as specified in the waste management and public space cleaning regulations, with fines ranging from 2,000 to 100,000 euros depending on the type of waste and extent of pollution.

The report reveals a total of 28 locations on public roads classified as illegal dumping points, where residents persistently dispose of waste. This marks an increase of nine areas compared to 2023, when there were 19 identified problematic sites.

Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, has announced plans for a ‘sit-in campaign’ starting next week. This initiative will involve him sitting next to these black spots to draw attention to the ordinance violations by residents. He will be accompanied by a Public Services inspector and local police officers.

Tarife highlighted the fact that many of these identified spots have waste containers located less than 100 meters away, and in some cases even as close as 20 meters from where the illegal dumping occurs. The aim is to eradicate these black spots where violations of the city’s waste regulations persist. He emphasised that collaboration is key to maintaining a cleaner municipality.

The illegal dumping locations, mainly consisting of household items, debris, and waste, are situated in various districts including Anaga – Barranco Jagua and Vía de Servicio Dársena P; Centro-Ifara – Emeterio Padrón Cruz street; La Piconera, Estanislao Brotons Poveda with Chiguergue street, Fernando Arozena Quintero, Islas Filipinas corner of Fernando Arozena Quintero street, Anatolio Fuentes García intersection of 301, Fernando Beatuell, José Miguel Galván Bello corner of Castillo-San Joaquín street, Sansofé street, Ramblas García Escámez, and Los Príncipes avenue in the Ofra-Costa Sur district.

In the Salud-La Salle district, dump sites can be found on Miguel Hernández street, La Ermita road, Granadilla street, and José Plácido Sansón; Ibaute Street, Luis Celso Guadalupe Avenue, Cataixa Street, Simon Rueda Street at the juncture of El Guincho, San Borondón with Roberto Sánchez Suárez, Tagoro Street, Laderitas Street in Pilar, Punta de Anaga street, and Acorán street.
