£2,000 Fine in Santa Cruz de Tenerife for Failure to Recycle Cardboard

An employee at a restaurant in the central area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been fined £2,000 by the City Council for depositing four bags of cardboard outside the designated container for this type of waste on January 11, disregarding the allocated schedule.

This constitutes a serious violation outlined in the Municipal Ordinance for Waste Management and Public Space Cleaning, which stipulates fines ranging from £2,000 to £100,000, unless it involves hazardous waste or contaminated land, in which case the fine will range from £20,000 to £600,000.

Mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, stated in a release that the council is obligated to enforce the Municipal Ordinance and therefore penalize individuals who do not adhere to coexistence rules and, through their actions, damage the city’s heritage “which is a collective property requiring effort and financial investment”.

Public Services Councillor, Carlos Tarife, revealed that the police report confirmed this was not the first instance of the employee’s improper actions, as he previously trespassed rules by disposing of rubbish outside the container when it was unoccupied despite prior warnings.

He emphasised the necessity of abiding by the Municipal Ordinance and utilising the underground containers provided for separate waste collection.

The City Council advocates for responsible behaviour, attentiveness, and respect towards public spaces to foster harmonious coexistence.
