Embracing winds of change, the Friendship Circle XII of January, an institution steeped in history situated in the heart of Tenerife, has just appointed its 35th president, the dynamic lawyer Andrés Rodríguez Delgado. A youthful 38 years old, Rodríguez is now the youngest leader to preside over this social club, having run unopposed in the elections held on April 25. With expertise in Urban Law and as the director of LexA3, Rodriguez has a deep-rooted connection to the Circle, having been associated with it since childhood when he worked as a tennis instructor. As the new president, his vision is to enhance and modernize the image of this venerable institution.
Being the youngest president, does this signal a change in direction?
“While I aim to maintain the positive trajectory set by my predecessor, Francisco Perera, with whom I served on the board for six years, I also envision infusing the Circle with a sense of modernity, renewal, and fresh aspirations. It’s natural that a 40-year-old perceives things differently than a 60-year-old. Hence, over the next four years, I anticipate some noticeable changes.”
What objectives do you plan to achieve during your tenure?
“My primary focus is on ensuring top-notch maintenance of our facilities and enhancing them wherever feasible. Recently, we inspected the Barranco Hondo premises with the works committee and the manager to identify areas needing attention. These facilities span nearly a kilometer and we are strategizing a plan for infrastructural improvements, particularly in the sports domain. This includes resurfacing the Greenset tennis courts by the year-end. Furthermore, we aim to revamp the spa at Barranco Hondo, with spacious sea-facing windows, and upgrade the gyms at both locations with cutting-edge equipment in response to members’ increasing demand. Meanwhile, at the Ruiz de Padrón headquarters, we are currently overhauling the electrical system to comply with regulations, refurbishing most of the artwork in the main room, and planning a furniture modernization. Improving communication with members is a key focus area, along with advancing environmental sustainability efforts. Additionally, we have petitioned the Cabildo for the renovation of the road leading to the Barranco Hondo headquarters, which is presently in a dilapidated state.”
-Any plans to establish a water sports facility closer to the capital in the future?
“While there are no immediate plans for a new sports facility, we do possess approximately 50,000 square meters of vacant land in Mayorazgo, acquired with the intention of constructing the current Barranco Hondo building. Although the idea of promoting water sports remains on our agenda, the high elevation and steep cliffs at our location pose challenges for direct sea access. While a study was conducted previously for this purpose, it was deemed economically unfeasible. Nevertheless, I’ve always harbored the childhood dream of seeing the Barranco Hondo Circle with sea access, though feasibility studies and economic considerations will determine its viability.”
-Could a swimming pool be constructed at the Ruiz de Padrón headquarters?
“While the idea of a swimming pool on the top floor was casually discussed, given the updated urban planning regulations, there are currently no concrete plans for this addition. The Ruiz de Padrón headquarters focuses more on cultural activities. The existing sports facilities cater to a range of activities like gymnastics, martial arts, ballet, yoga, and Pilates. Space limitations at this site necessitate careful management of schedules and rooms to accommodate all activities. Moreover, being a declared Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) restricts our ability to expand, as certain aspects are safeguarded.”
-What does the Circle bring to Santa Cruz de Tenerife?
“Our cultural events, which are open to all, form a cornerstone of the offerings at Círculo de Amistad. Negotiations are underway with the Autonomous Organization of Culture for a collaborative agreement, recognizing our significant cultural contributions to Tenerife. We host a diverse array of events each week, however, there is a misconception among the public regarding access to these events. To address this, the City Council will include us in its cultural agenda to promote our exhibitions, performances, lectures, and more. In return, we are prepared to offer our theater for external use. Our society is a cultural frontrunner, not only in Santa Cruz but across the metropolitan region, and we aim to sustain this status.”
How many members does the Friendship Circle have? Any strategies to attract new participants?
“Currently, we have 17,000 registered members who are the lifeblood of our community. Consequently, all initiatives must cater to their satisfaction and wellbeing within the society’s financial means. We are introducing a dedicated section for youth and recreational activities to engage members aged 14 to 30, a demographic crucial for the Circle’s future. Prospective members can join by purchasing a share, priced at around 7,000 euros, in addition to a monthly fee of 62 euros per family unit. The predominant profile of new members leans towards young individuals or couples with young children.”
-How is the financial health of the company?
“Our society boasts a robust financial standing with an annual budget of five million euros. We offer the most extensive cultural, recreational, and sports facilities in the Canary Islands, and our aim is to utilize funds for venue enhancements and service expansions. The Barranco Hondo site boasts numerous amenities including tennis and paddle courts, squash and racquetball courts, a spa, five swimming pools, and soon, a new pickleball court. Additionally, the playground will undergo renovations to ensure inclusivity.”
-Multiple private clubs operate in Santa Cruz. Is there competition?
“Each club serves a distinct purpose and provides unique offerings. Competition isn’t a concern; rather, we enjoy positive relationships and collaborations with other clubs like Club Náutico, Real Casino, Paso Alto, and the Oliver Club, participating in joint events and activities.”
-What is the outlook for the Friendship Circle?
“I am optimistic about the future. Numerous projects lie ahead that require us to optimize existing resources efficiently. As I thank our members for their trust, I urge them to become actively involved in the social governance of our Circle.”
