This weekend, La Laguna is buzzing with excitement as it hosts Family Fun Day, a lively event organized by the City Council in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare, along with support from the Commerce, Sports, and Youth departments. The event has attracted a large crowd to the city centre to enjoy a day filled with leisure activities, recreational fun, and sports events. The response from citizens has been overwhelming, with families and children enthusiastically participating in the various activities planned across five different areas of the town.
The festivities kicked off at 10:00 a.m. with a vibrant parade by the 101 Brass Band. Their engaging performance inspired people to hit the streets and partake in a day of celebration. The sunny weather throughout the day has further encouraged greater participation.
The Mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, along with the Councilor for Social Welfare, María Cruz, the Councilor for Tourism and Commerce, Estefanía Díaz, and other council members, officially marked the start of the day, inviting everyone to enjoy the numerous scheduled activities, all of which are free of charge.
“This event is a touching opportunity for families in our town, as well as for anyone who wishes to join, to have a delightful and memorable day filled with activities suitable for all ages, from the little ones to the elderly,” mentioned Luis Yeray Gutiérrez. By midday, he expressed his satisfaction with the high level of participation and positive response from residents, who turned out in large numbers to be a part of the day’s celebrations.
The Mayor also emphasised the city council’s commitment to initiatives like this that help rejuvenate the city. He noted the careful placement of all stalls and activities to avoid disrupting the local restaurant businesses with outdoor seating. Furthermore, the scheduled events will conclude by 8:00 p.m. to allow residents to rest.
The Family Fun Day programme is spread across five themed areas in the city. Heraclio Sánchez Street is a hub of family-friendly activities including bouncy castles, escape rooms, caricature artists, face painting, emergency vehicle displays, play station games, and family workshops.
The Fantasy Zone situated in Hermano Ramón Square is dedicated to children, featuring singing games, clown performances, puppet shows by the Tragaluz company, storytelling by Antonio Conejo, and magic shows by Héctor Fernández. All these attractions are complemented with sign language interpreters and a designated area for breastfeeding.
The Cathedral Square houses the Functional Diversity Zone and sports area, hosting workshops by various associations, the House of Disability initiative, a popular photo booth with a giant King Kong figure, and spaces for sports activities.
In Plaza de la Junta Suprema and Calle San Agustín, visitors can explore a rock and geek market, as well as discover different associations promoting their causes. Another area is dedicated to the circus at the Aneja School and Javier Fernández Quesada Student Park, showcasing acrobatics, juggling, clown performances, giant dinosaurs, and Jurassic World animations.
Additionally, throughout the day, four guided tours are available, showcasing the main heritage sites of the city’s historic centre, all starting from Plaza del Adelantado.
To ensure inclusivity, the Social Welfare area has two orange points for people with disabilities to easily access, as well as two purple points designated as safe spaces throughout the day.
