“Neighbours’ Well-being a Top Priority Despite Poor Management,” Tacoronte City Council Employees Declare

Today, workers from the Tacoronte City Council came together in a demonstration outside the Town Hall following their complaints about the failure of Mayor Sandra Izquierdo to meet their demands for improved working conditions, which they have been awaiting for “a number of years.”

Yesterday, CSIF, CCOO and Intersindical Canaria issued a joint statement announcing that all City Hall employees will be initiating strikes every Friday at 10:00 a.m. in protest against the “ineffective management of personnel by the municipality’s mayor, Sandra Izquierdo.”

Having reached unanimous agreement among all public employees through an assembly decision, they have chosen to gather at the main entrance of the northern Consistory during their half-hour morning break, as they did today for the first time, to express their discontent over the long-standing mismanagement within the City Council. This dissatisfaction has intensified due to Mayor Sandra Izquierdo’s repeated failure to fulfil her promises, which is now jeopardising nearly a hundred jobs unless the stabilization objective is met by the year-end, alongside the ongoing halt of the objective evaluation of employees through a Job List that would enhance the working conditions in one of the City councils with “some of the poorest reputation and salary conditions” in the entire Canary Islands. Furthermore, with the abrupt pause in the collective agreement that was ratified over a year ago by both the administration and unions, and the lack of initiative to align the rights of workers and civil servants within the Consistory.

The three unions are resolute in their stance, asserting that the rights of workers are being disregarded within Tacoronte City Council, where expectations for improvements that have been unmet for “many years.” Hence, today marks the first of the planned demonstrations but certainly not the last, as they vow to persist until Sandra Izquierdo fulfils her commitments, commencing with the effective implementation of stabilization measures within the City Council, finalising the collective rights of the staff, and most significantly, conducting a fair evaluation of each employee’s performance by eliminating outdated working and salary conditions.

These employees emphasise that their objective is never to inconvenience the residents of Tacoronte and they are fully conscious of their duty to serve the community.
