The Canary Islands’ President, Fernando Clavijo, assured on Thursday that his administration will “adhere to legal regulations” regarding historical memory and will devise a new inventory of Franco-era remnants in the archipelago after rescinding the previous one.
Speaking to reporters, he criticised the ‘Flower Pact’ for its missteps in creating a catalogue concentrated solely on Santa Cruz de Tenerife, stating that “rules should be universal.”
He highlighted that the City Council successfully appealed in court, leading to a reassessment of the catalogue, and now suggests adopting an approach that is more “ideal” and avoids unnecessary legal disputes resulting from a process which lacked a “logical and heritage-based” decision-making approach.
He further added that the focus should now be on executing tasks correctly to prevent additional legal setbacks that could impact the previous administration’s initiatives, such as the Erjos tunnel construction, for which the autonomous community may face compensation obligations.
