The inauguration ceremony of the new auditor directors of the Audience of Accounts of the Canary Islands was presided over today by Astrid Pérez, the president of the Canary Islands Parliament. The appointed directors are Luis Ángel Ibarra Betancort, Almudena Estévez Estévez, Verónica Domínguez Santana, José Tomás Estalella Limiñana, and Pedro Pacheco González, who is the only one continuing in this role.
Astrid Pérez addressed the members of the Plenary Court, emphasizing the vital role of this institution in financial control and accountability. She stated that the work of the new auditor directors is crucial in ensuring the efficient and transparent management of citizens’ resources while adhering to legality and transparency principles.
The president of the Chamber stressed the importance of continuing the modernization efforts, streamlining procedures, advancing in technology implementation, and bringing about generational change. She highlighted the fact that 70% of the staff in this institution is over 50 years old, and numerous retirements will be occurring in this mandate. Astrid Pérez also commended the professionalism and dedication of the public employees of the Audience of Accounts.
Expressing gratitude towards the auditor directors who are not continuing in their roles, such as Elena María Hernández Mollö-Christensen, Fernando Figuereo Force, María Inmaculada Saavedra Padrón, and Gervasio Miguel Rodríguez Mederos, Astrid Pérez recognized the significant contribution of Pedro Pacheco during his tenure. She highlighted his role in the modernization and digital transformation of the Audience of Accounts over the past 6 years.
The Canary Islands Audience of Accounts was established 35 years ago by the Canary Islands Parliament to provide necessary external audit assistance. While organically linked to the Chamber, it operates independently with autonomy in organization, function, and budget.
As per article 59 of the Statute of Autonomy of the Canary Islands, the Audience of Accounts serves to supervise the economic, financial, and accounting management of the public sector of the Autonomous Community and other public entities of the Canary Islands, in line with constitutional regulations.
