University of La Laguna Students Gather Against the Atrocities in Gaza

An assembly of students from GARA took place on Tuesday, May 14 at 12:00 p.m. on the Guajara Campus of the University of La Laguna (ULL) to address the issue of the atrocities in Gaza and the influence of Zionism within the university.

This initiative aligns with the ongoing student movements in the United States, urging the University of La Laguna students to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian community, as stated by the group in a release.

“Palestine has endured enough, suffering for 75 years since Israel’s invasion of Palestinian land, leading to the displacement of half a million Palestinians from their homes. Despite the Security Council outlining the principles of justice and lasting peace, urging Israel to withdraw,” they emphasised.

It is also highlighted that Israel has been engaged in a “massive atrocity” since October 7, resulting in over 30,000 fatalities and 7,000 individuals missing. The recent attack in Rafah over the weekend claimed 120 lives and forced 110,000 people to flee.

“We demand that the Government terminate diplomatic relations and arms sales to an illegitimate state using them for real-time atrocities. Moreover, we urge universities across the country to cease all ties and collaborations with the state of Israel,” they outlined.

Students also denounce the collaboration of Europe and America in the “atrocity” perpetrated against the Palestinian people, leading to a “significant surge” of protests across numerous universities worldwide.

On Friday, May 9, students pursuing a Social Education Degree at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) gathered, condemning the ongoing atrocities in Gaza. Under the banners of “we take a stand” and “Social Education stands up,” the students oppose the violence targeting innocent civilians in the conflict zone.

The organizers of the ULPGC protests announced their intention to continue actions until at least Tuesday and revealed plans to submit a formal letter to the Rector’s Office for a stance to be adopted by the public university. The youths seek increasing support from educators, fellow students, and the entire university community, urging all students to “defend life.”
