Award Winners: Be Flat and Sylphes Aerial Ballet at MUECA 2024

The MUECA 2024 awards at the Puerto de la Cruz International Street Art Festival were bestowed upon the performances Follow me by the Belgian troupe Be Flat, and Sylphs by Sylphes Aerial Ballet. A special mention was also given to the clown Mr. Copini for his vibrant acts in Walo World and The Herock during this edition.

Following the evaluation and enjoyment of fifty scheduled performances over four days, a professional panel consisting of Luciano Fernández, the director of the Narón Theatre in Galicia; Silvina Silbergleit, director of the San Martín theatre complex in Buenos Aires; and Carmen Nieves Farrais, a member of the citizen platform Cómplice MUECA, deliberated on Sunday and recognised these shows for their “innovation, freshness, interaction with the audience, elegance, and beauty.”

The MUECA 2024 Award was presented to Be Flat “for introducing an exemplary prototype of street art to the host city, appearing spontaneous but crafted with meticulous detail and precision.”

To perform Follow me at the Festival, the members of Be Flat journeyed to Puerto de la Cruz, specifically to the La Ranilla neighbourhood, days before the show to tailor their act to the surroundings and create a unique experience for the audience.

“Follow me is a bespoke performance that encourages the observation of the city’s facades, balconies, furniture, and heritage from a fresh perspective.” Featuring parkour acrobatics intertwined with theatricality, each scene engaged audiences of all ages who became part of the spectacle.

The judges also lauded the performance by Sylphes Aerial Ballet dancers for delivering “a visually stunning show that will linger in the memories of the viewers.”

Sylphs captivated the audience for 45 minutes, with the judges noting, “The emotions evoked by the superb display of technique, composition, professionalism, and skill make it a deserving recipient of the MUECA 2024 recognition.” They also commended the elevated stage layout which thousands enjoyed in the Dock area.

“The precision in the aerial figures crafted by the dancers, the accompanying lighting and effects, and the blend of youth and professionalism were impactful on all spectators fortunate to witness the performance.”

This edition also recognised Mr. Copini with a special mention, “for his vivacity, audience connection, and unique ability to spread joy. GRIN”. It serves as poetic justice for his spontaneous intervention 15 years ago when living in Puerto de la Cruz, stumbling upon the festival.
