A swimmer showing signs of near drowning was rescued off the coast of Tenerife

A 20-year-old man was rescued by the GES helicopter near the Charco Verde natural pool in La Guancha, Tenerife, according to reports from the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center (Cecoes) 1-1-2.

The incident took place at 2:27 p.m. on Sunday, when the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center (CECOES) 1-1-2 of the Canary Islands government received an alert about a swimmer in distress around 50 meters off the shore, in hazardous sea conditions.

Upon initial assessment, he displayed signs of near drowning and suffered moderate multiple bruising. After being rescued by the GES helicopter, he was flown to the La Guancha helipad and then transferred in an SUC basic life support ambulance to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria.

Firefighters and police officers assisted the emergency services.

The Canary Islands government has issued a pre-alert for coastal phenomena across La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.

Expectations include sea waves potentially exceeding one and a half meters in height and local gusts of wind surpassing speeds of 60 kilometers per hour on the southeast and northwest coastlines of these islands.

In light of this situation, the authorities urge the public to steer clear of risky situations in the designated coastal zones and follow the self-protection guidelines established to prevent sea-related hazards and accidents.

It is crucial, for the duration of the rough sea conditions, to avoid staying on jetties and breakwaters or lingering in close proximity to the sea to prevent potential harm from waves. Refrain from taking selfies or videos in these coastal areas. Additionally, it is advisable to avoid driving vehicles on roads near the shoreline.
