The Municipal Council for Children and Adolescents of Los Realejos is running the awareness campaign No gifts left unwrapped, which emphasizes the obligation to clean up pet feces in public areas. The regulation ordinance sanctions non-compliance with fines of up to 2,000 euros or community service for the offending owners, as stated by the Animal Welfare councillor, Josué Bacallado.
The initiative arose from meetings held by young representatives of children and adolescents from Los Realejos, who expressed their interest in appealing to civic consciousness under the message Your dog is your responsibility. The Municipal Council for Children and Adolescents created the campaign proposal, developed the concept, script, and slogan. Its members, along with their pets as extras, participated in the filming of the commercial, which began to be shared on the official social media channels of the Los Realejos City Council, as well as on the four local television stations with active programming on the island of Tenerife.
“We are satisfied with the outcome of this campaign that reminds citizens of the importance of keeping communal spaces clean, a message that is clearly conveyed through the experience and voices of the children of Los Realejos,” stated the mayor, Adolfo González. The councillor for Children highlighted the “great work done by these municipal child representatives,” an example that “raising social awareness is extremely important to work on from an early age.”

Through the Council, Leyre Herrera and Iballa Ravelo argued that “the interesting aspect of this campaign is to extend it to the entire education community, and from there, take it to the neighbourhoods of the municipality.” In this sense, children will be responsible for presenting the results of the campaign in video and poster format in their respective schools and high schools, while also providing the material edited by the Los Realejos City Council for distribution.
