From Industrial Estate to Mini Dump: The Transformation of Centro Valle Urbanization

Back in 2010, a prolonged battle came to an end when the Supreme Court invalidated the partial plan for the Centro Valle de La Orotava urbanization project. The project, initially intended to transform the area from banana plantations to an industrial and commercial hub similar to the one in San Jerónimo, faced legal and technical violations and failed to allocate sufficient green spaces.

This legal victory, while celebrated, has left residents in a state of helplessness and legal uncertainty. The development, although private, remains incomplete and unapproved by the City Council.

For years now, residents have struggled with the neglect of the area, which has become a hotspot for anti-social activities, littered with debris and unwanted waste. The abandoned buildings attract individuals who use the space as a makeshift dumpsite, leading to foul odours and an unsightly environment.

Approximately 30 individuals, including minors, endure the consequences of this neglect daily, eagerly awaiting a resolution from the development companies and the local council. They live amidst garbage, unpaved roads riddled with potholes, and a sense of impending danger due to the unsafe conditions.

Residents highlight the lack of basic services, such as public lighting and internet access, exacerbating their living conditions. The absence of amenities like water pressure and proper infrastructure adds to their struggles, forcing them to cope with a precarious situation.

Not all hope is lost, as some residents have taken matters into their own hands. From guarding their properties to documenting and deterring suspicious activities, individuals have adapted to the neglect and apathy shown by the authorities.

Taking Matters into Their Own Hands

One resident admits to resorting to self-reliance due to the inaction of the administrations. Faced with no other choice, they have implemented measures to safeguard their surroundings, reflecting the dire need for intervention.

Despite the lack of formal complaints, the Councilor for Urban Planning and Territorial Planning acknowledges sporadic incidents of concern. Efforts are being made to address these issues in collaboration with the owners to clean up the area and mitigate potential risks.

In light of the ongoing challenges, residents propose practical solutions such as installing barriers at the entrance of the urbanization to control vehicular access and enhance security measures.
