A wine from Güimar named the best in the Canary Islands in 2024. This was the ruling of the jury of the Official Agrocanarias Contest for the wines of the Islands, which has chosen for the second consecutive year the Brumas de Ayosa Malvasía Aromática, produced by the SAT Viticultores de la Comarca de Güímar under the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Valle de Güímar (Tenerife).

Established in 1989 in Güímar (Tenerife), this regional winery was formed by the union of fifteen winegrowers with the aim of producing the first bottled wine in the municipality. In addition to this award, other wines from the winery have been awarded the “Best Wine of the Canary Islands” in the 2019, 2020, and 2023 editions.

Currently, it involves the participation of 160 families cultivating their vineyards on estates located between 200 and 1,500 meters above sea level, distributed on difficult-to-access terraces, not mechanized, with vineyards on trellises or in traditional pergola cultivation. The combination of different factors – altitude, volcanic soils, prevalence of the trade winds, high luminosity, and the spring-like climate of the area – enables the cultivation of high-quality grapes.

With limited production due to the quantity of grapes harvested, they produce varieties such as Listán Blanco, Malvasía Blanca, Moscatel de Alejandría, Verijadiego Negra, Negramoll Negra, Listán Negro, and Merlot.

The brands marketed by this Agricultural Transformation Society are Brumas de Ayosa (PDO Valle de Güímar) and Pico Cho Marcial (PDO Canary Islands).

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing, and Food Sovereignty of the Canary Islands Government, Narvay Quintero, highlighted the winery’s strong commitment “to quality over quantity,” with a limited production of around 200,000 bottles per harvest, of which about 1,200 correspond to the wine considered the Best Wine of the Canary Islands. “This is an exclusive product made with the Malvasía grape, in this case aromatic, one of the flagship varieties of the archipelago for which these producers have been previously awarded at Agrocanarias,” he added.

Quality of the Wines

Quintero and the director of ICCA, Luis Arráez Guadalupe, announced the jury’s verdict of the competition held in Lanzarote from April 17 to 19, with 230 entries in this edition.

A total of 58 awards have been granted, including 13 Grand Gold Medals, 26 Golds, and 15 Silvers, in addition to special distinctions for the Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands, Best Wine chosen by Winemakers, and Best Image and Presentation. These are productions from the eleven PDOs of the archipelago representing all the islands, 161 from Tenerife, twenty-three from La Palma, sixteen from Lanzarote, ten from Gran Canaria, eight from El Hierro, seven from La Gomera, and five from Fuerteventura.

The award for the Best Organic Wine of the Canary Islands went to Pagos de Reverón blanco seco barrica, by Eugenio Reverón Sierra S.L. (PDO Abona), which also received a Gold Medal; and the Best Wine chosen by winemakers was La Cerca (in the category of dry white wines and/or barrel fermented), produced by Productos Importados de Alimentación S.A (PDO Canary Islands), which also received a Gold. This recognition is granted by a panel of twelve professionals representing each PDO and the Canarian Winemakers Association.

The distinction of Best Image and Presentation 2024 was awarded to Conatvs, by Pedro Antonio Martín Hernández (PDO Canary Islands).

During the event, Quintero highlighted the high quality of the entries in this edition of the competition “as recognized by the tasting panel,” and the 29% increase in participation compared to the previous edition, referring to the evolution of Canarian wines in the past years.

In recent decades, the wine industry in the Canary Islands has seen significant growth due to the efforts of viticulturists, oenologists, and winemakers. Their dedication has helped professionalise the sector, resulting in prestigious awards that are part of the government’s initiatives to promote high-quality productions in the archipelago.

Competition

The competition is governed by a blind tasting system, where a panel of twenty-two specialists in the analysis of agricultural products evaluated the samples of the contest without knowing their origin, determining with their ratings the productions that have been awarded.

The awarded wines will be able to use the official badge corresponding to the received award for a year (a kind of adhesive medal placed on the bottles) and will participate in the various events promoting Canary products that the ICCA organises throughout the year within and outside of the islands.

Lastly, the ICCA will cover the registration and logistics expenses related to participating in the annual competition of the CERVIM (Mountain Viticulture Research, Study, Protection, Coordination and Valorisation Centre) for those wineries admitted to the Agrocanarias Competition. They will also have the right to the reimbursement of logistics expenses for participation in the national wine competition determined by the Vine and Wine Council.
