Relatives of Juan José María González de Chaves, better known as Hansi, who is seriously ill in a hospital in Mexico, are waiting for updates on his health so that he can return to Tenerife, if needed, with the assistance of the authorities.
The man, who travelled to Mexico on vacation with his wife to visit their daughter and there suffered, among other conditions, from diffuse alveolar haemorrhage, has had to spend 90,000 Euros after twenty days in a hospital, which is why he has requested assistance, as reported by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of the Canary Islands, José Luis Perestelo.
The Spanish consul in Monterrey assisted the family last Saturday, Perestelo pointed out, who remains in contact with the family, offering the collaboration of the Government of Canarias.
However, it has been indicated that his health condition must stabilize for him to be able to return to Tenerife, either on a regular or extraordinary flight.
It has also been stated that the role of the regional Government is to safeguard the rights of this Canarian citizen, who had a travel insurance that refuses to cover the hospital expenses by alleging that he was already ill before travelling.
The man’s wife, Carolina Martínez, mentioned that her husband has been in ICU for 25 days with the support of a ventilator “in a stable but critical condition”.
Martínez noted that she has been contacted by both the Spanish Government and the Canarian government to inquire about her husband’s health status and determine a way to repatriate him without jeopardizing his health.
“We request to return home,” asserted Martinez, explaining that it is necessary for his health to “recover a little more” before he can fly.
Regarding the medical insurance, she added that they were informed that her husband had pneumonia and thrombosis before leaving Spain, hence they refuse to cover any expenses, not even the repatriation.
Fundraising Efforts
The daughter of the affected individual has initiated a fundraising campaign through the GofundMe platform to continue covering the treatment and medications.
In the post, she mentioned that on March 31, already in Monterrey, her father started feeling unwell, with extreme tiredness, cough, and difficulty breathing, so they sought medical consultation in a hospital where they were prescribed several medications.
After several days, his condition worsened, and he lost all sensation in his right leg, where several clots were found, and it was also determined that his lungs were collapsed.
His symptoms deteriorated, leading to his transfer to the ICU, where his lung condition exacerbated and after several tests, it was diagnosed that he had a diffuse alveolar haemorrhage.
According to his daughter, the man, who has been transferred to a public hospital as the family no longer has resources, will require a new operation that exceeds 15,000 Euros to save his leg.
She mentioned that they had to borrow money and incur debts “due to the critical situation” and still have to pay for more medications and treatments needed for the man to recover, thus requesting public collaboration.
