The two main outpatient surgery rooms at Hospital del Norte, located in Icod de los Vinos, will start operating in the afternoons from today. This measure aims to make the service more accessible to the local population in this area of the island, eliminating the need for them to travel to the Canary Islands University Hospital (HUC).
During a recent visit by government officials including President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, and Health Minister Esther Monzón, the Operating Room Supervisor, Vanesa Rodríguez Pérez, announced this development. Major outpatient surgery allows patients to return home on the same day of the operation, reducing waiting times and enabling quicker recovery in a familiar environment.
Last year, a total of 1,650 surgical procedures were carried out in various specialties at Hospital del Norte. With the extended operating hours, it is expected that this number will increase significantly. The medical team has been restructured to accommodate this change, with plans to expand further as needed.
The Health Minister highlighted the importance of reducing waiting lists and providing efficient healthcare services across the Canary Islands. The agreement with Tenerife Cabildo for funding of 1.4 million Euros towards sterilization and laboratory equipment was also mentioned, aimed at improving surgical capabilities and care provision in the northern region of the island.
Rosa Dávila emphasized the need to make services more accessible to the population, regardless of administrative boundaries. Fernando Clavijo praised the healthcare professionals for their crucial role in delivering quality care.
