Tenerife Cabildo’s president, Rosa Dávila (Canary Coalition), clarified on Wednesday that when she referred to the mayor of Granadilla, Jennifer Miranda (PSOE), as a “spoiled girl”, it might not have been the most precise choice of words. She emphasized that her comment was directed at Miranda’s behaviour and not at the mayor herself.
Following the announcement that the mayor of Granadilla would not attend a meeting called by the regional government president, Fernando Clavijo (CC), regarding the La Tejita hotel situation, Dávila remarked that it resembled the reaction of a spoiled individual rather than that of a public servant.
Dávila expressed, “I believe in traditional values where, regardless of personal affiliations, when summoned to a meeting by figures such as the President of the Government, a Minister, or a Secretary of State, I attend representing my institution and subsequently share my views.”
While admitting that her portrayal of Miranda (PSOE) may not have been entirely accurate, Dávila stressed the importance of institutional responsibility transcending political stances and personal opinions, drawing from her own political journey as evidence.
“My intent was to express dissatisfaction with her absence both before a meeting summoned by President Fernando Clavijo and in light of a letter sent by Jennifer Miranda seeking a meeting with both the President and myself,” she added.
The Tenerife president argued, “Just 24 hours prior, we were informed through the media that she opted not to attend for political reasons.”
Rosa Dávila defended the collaborative role of institutions in problem-solving, highlighting that their institutional representatives bear the responsibility for this task irrespective of their political affiliations.
“I seek common ground before escalating tensions, and that meeting was precisely an opportunity for consensus,” she concluded.
In a press briefing near the contentious La Tejita hotel, the Granadilla mayor explained her decision not to attend the meeting after reacting to Clavijo’s statements and those of several regional Executive members regarding the refusal to purchase the land on which the hotel stands, seen as a symbol for the necessary economic model change in the Canary Islands. She accused Clavijo of targeting the two socialist mayors (Granadilla and Adeje) in a “political ploy” to shift focus away from the Canary Islands Government.
Miranda also stated that she had met with the Viqueira Group, the hotel’s developer, the previous week, and they are willing to sell the land. She further argued that the Granadilla City Council cannot review the construction permit unilaterally as claimed by the regional government without the required assessments from the Government of the Canary Islands and Cabildo.
