A Maritime Rescue vessel saved fifty people traveling in a canoe spotted off the south coast of Tenerife on Wednesday, some of whom were in poor health, according to sources from the public agency.
The rescue operation was launched after a call was made from the canoe to the 112 emergency services in Canary Islands, indicating that they were about 12 nautical miles from the coast, unable to pinpoint their exact location.
Maritime Rescue deployed the ship Salvamar Menkalinan, and a vessel from the Civil Guard also joined in the search efforts.

Meanwhile, a whale-watching boat reported the sighting of a canoe near El Palmar and approached it.
Its crew confirmed that the vessel was not taking on water and verified that someone on board had made the distress call to 112.
With the rescue operation in place, which included the Salvamar Alpheratz and the Helimer 202, the 112 emergency services received another call that caused confusion, initially believed to be from another boat in distress, but was later confirmed to be from the same canoe.
