Transport in Tenerife: Enhanced Security Measures at Titsa Facilities

The Tenerife Island Council is allocating 2.6 million Euros for the improvement of the infrastructure of the public company Interurban Transport of Tenerife (Titsa). Among the measures to be implemented with these new investments are the installation of access control systems and surveillance cameras in the workshops located in Cuevas Blancas, southwest of Santa Cruz, and at the capital city’s Interchange.

Insular Mobility Councillor, Eulalia García, explains that, regarding infrastructure, 1.9 million Euros will be invested, including improvements in overhead cabling; a hot water cleaning machine; lifting columns; compressors; undercarriage wash; a tent at the auxiliary workshop in San Jerónimo (La Orotava) and the installation project of photovoltaic energy for the Interchange of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

On the other hand, the Island Corporation will allocate over 700,000 Euros to access control at Titsa facilities by incorporating surveillance cameras in the workshops and the Interchange. Similarly, planned actions include the update of bus communications to 4G technology; the installation of new electric vehicle charging points for the auxiliary fleet and public parking lots of Titsa, as well as the provision of equipment, repair work, and maintenance.

Regarding the transport fleet, the Tenerife Island Council has recently received 75 of the 250 new buses to launch new routes and reinforce different Titsa routes. The vehicles, 70% of which are hybrid, will allow for the renewal of the current fleet of over 10 years old, reducing CO2 emissions and achieving a 30% savings in fossil fuel consumption. Additionally, all of them meet accessibility requirements, allowing Titsa to position itself as the third-largest public transport company with the most modern and sustainable fleet in Spain.

Eulalia García appreciates: “The line of work we maintain in the field of Mobility and, specifically in public transport, is the renewal of both human and material resources.” This is the reason for the incorporation of 92 new drivers into service this year after undergoing a one-month training period.

The training involves acquiring knowledge of the routes, managing the best customer service, understanding the vehicle types and payment methods, as well as occupational risk prevention. Insular Councillor Eulalia García and Titsa Manager, Raquel Martínez, are responsible for welcoming the new employees and explaining their “important commitment to the population of Tenerife,” given the importance of mobility for the island’s residents.

Titsa transported nearly 70 million passengers in 2023, marking a 45% increase compared to the previous year. This was largely due to the impact of free services for subscribers. Specifically, there were 69,472,103 passengers, an increase of 44.8%, with a total of 21,387,561 journeys.
