SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 4th May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The candidate representing CC for the European Parliament, Carlos Alonso, argues that immigration through the Atlantic route constitutes “a true human tragedy” that necessitates increased assistance from the European Union “so that the Canary Islands can effectively combat the continuous migratory pressure that reaches its shores on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.”
As per the nationalist party, the Migration and Asylum Pact endorsed by the European Union, “though not flawless, will enable the Canary Islands to access supplementary resources to tackle this reality.”
Alonso proposes the organization of an International Migration Conference in the Canary Islands to address the challenges arising from irregular migration.
Along these lines, the Canarian Coalition candidate for the European Elections insists that “the Canary Islands should evolve into a training hub for African youth, offering increased development prospects to prevent them from being compelled to migrate perilously in search of prosperity.” This concept aims to be executed through a Commission-funded European Programme.
According to him, development cooperation must play a pivotal role in the new phase that Europe is entering, focusing on “fortifying states, enhancing resources, and elevating levels of well-being.”
In addition, Alonso emphasises the necessity for Europe to concentrate its efforts on frontier regions and implement tangible goals of “solidarity and fair apportionment of responsibilities among member states.”
He stresses that the primary objective is for the inhabitants of Africa to discover opportunities for advancement within their own territories “to mitigate the compulsion to migrate and, consequently, prevent the tragic loss of lives that currently plagues the waters of the Atlantic.”
