SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, 2nd May. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Tenerife Cabildo and the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council are allocating £10.5 million for the refurbishment of the TF-180 cross-island road, which links the towns of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and La Laguna.
This marks the initiation phase of the project, now open for a 20-day public exhibition period after being officially announced in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province Gazette on Thursday.
The Cabildo’s intervention for the TF-180 refurbishment includes a complete overhaul of the road, converting it into an urban street. The plans involve reorganising traffic flow, creating additional parking spaces and sidewalks, along with introducing planters, new urban furniture and lighting.
The project holds a budget of £10,523,161, with the Cabildo funding 73% of it and the City Council covering the remainder under an agreed collaboration. The works are scheduled to be completed within 24 months, as per the Cabildo’s official announcement.
Minister of Highways, Dámaso Arteaga, stated that once the project gets the green light, the Santa Cruz City Council will have to facilitate the necessary land acquisition or expropriation for the works to proceed.
“The TF-180 island road, at present, does not offer an alternative route that eases the traffic flow between Santa Cruz de Tenerife and San Cristóbal de La Laguna, two key urban centres on the island. Due to urban developments, it has transitioned into a more locally-focused axis, hence less proficient in managing substantial traffic volumes,” Arteaga elaborated.
The primary aim of the project is to convert the TF-180 section that will undergo enhancements into a compliant urban road, aligned with current regulations and the General Urban Plan, equipped with essential urban amenities to enhance safety and comfort.
The road will feature two lanes heading towards Santa Cruz and one going towards La Laguna.
Moreover, maximum parking capacity will be provided based on the road’s width, with sidewalks mandated to be at least two meters wide. Where sidewalk width exceeds three meters, planters will be installed to maintain the minimum clearance width.
